Tibetan Mastiff: The Ancient Protector

The Tibetan Mastiff has many names–whether you know it as the Nomad dog or the lion dog, there is no breed quite like this one. Throughout history, the Tibetan Mastiff has been known as a protector, but this ancient breed hasn’t always received the respect it deserves.

The Tibetan Mastiff originated in Tibet. This breed can be traced back over 2,000 years and they’re famously known for guarding ancient monasteries. While Tibetan Mastiffs are relatively aloof toward strangers, they’re fiercely loyal to their owners.

The Troubled History Of A Noble Breed

Anyone who sees a Tibetan Mastiff can immediately sense the nobility and grandeur of this breed. Weighing between 100-160 pounds, these large dogs are the ultimate guardians and even resemble the majestic nature of a lion.

Unfortunately, Tibetan Mastiffs have a troubled history and have been mistreated in certain countries. At one point, owning a Tibetan Mastiff was a status symbol but once wealthy owners realized these large dogs were not suited for life in the city, thousands of dogs were abandoned in the streets.

At Snow Mountain Monastery Tibetan Mastiffs, we treat our Tibetan Mastiffs with the respect and love they deserve. It’s our passion to educate others about these ancient and loyal dogs.
